Yes — the lake is calm and gentle, and every tour starts with a full safety briefing and kayak tutorial that takes complete beginners from nervous to confident in minutes. Suitable for ages 5 to 105, no experience required.
A glow worm isn't a worm — it's the larva of a fungus gnat called Arachnocampa luminosa, a species found only in New Zealand. It spins sticky threads to catch insects and glows blue-green through a chemical reaction near its tail. The glowing larval stage can last 6 months to 2 years.
Tours run safely in light rain, and glow worms are still clearly visible — top-quality waterproof gear is provided. If conditions are genuinely unsafe, guests are contacted in advance and offered a full refund or rebooking.
Pickup is from central Rotorua, with the lake launch point just 15 minutes away. Exact pickup location and time are confirmed at the time of booking.
Photos are welcome on the lake, under the stars, and on the beach. Inside the glow worm caves, phones and lights aren't permitted to protect the glow worm habitat — a free set of professional photos is provided afterwards.
Wear warm layers underneath, plus closed-toe shoes if possible. Splash pants, rain jackets, booties and life jackets are provided for every guest.
Yes, guests aged 5 to 105 are welcome. Children kayak with an accompanying adult, and guides are experienced at keeping younger guests engaged and safe.
Fitness requirements are minimal. The paddle is gentle and at a relaxed pace, comparable to a 20-minute walk.
Departure times shift with sunset throughout the year so darkness lines up with the tour. Glow worms are visible year-round, and winter evenings often bring the clearest, stillest skies.
Free cancellation is available up to 48 hours before the tour. If the tour is cancelled due to unsafe conditions, guests receive a full refund or the option to rebook.
