After a big day out in Rotorua, whether you’ve been exploring geothermal parks, biking through the forest, or getting out on the lakes. You’re likely ready to find some good food and a spot to unwind.
As a local who’s worked and explored here for years (and eaten my way around town), here are my recommendations for restaurants and bars that consistently deliver. Good food, relaxed vibes, and meals that hit the spot after an adventure!
The Pig & Whistle - A Rotorua favourite for hearty pub meals
Set inside a converted police station, The Pig & Whistle is a Rotorua classic.
This is one of my go-to spots when I’m after something delicious, easy, and filling. Expect hearty, generous meals, a relaxed atmosphere, and the kind of place locals genuinely keep coming back to.
And they've just launched their new winter menu, so you'll see me here again soon!
Eat Streat - Rotorua's Hub of Restaurants and Bars
Eat Streat is a go-to in Rotorua when you want plenty of choice all in one spot. It’s fully covered, always has a good atmosphere, and makes it easy for everyone in your group to find something they’re keen on.
A few standouts:
BREW | Craft Beer Pub
If you’re after burgers, loaded fries, pork belly, or pizza - this is the spot. The beer selection’s solid, service is quick, and the vibe is relaxed. Perfect for something filling and uncomplicated after a big day out.Macs Steakhouse
A classic done well. Generous cuts, cooked properly, and paired with a solid wine list that doesn’t try too hard. Great if you want a sit-down dinner that still feels easygoing.Ambrosia
Big menu, big portions, and consistently good food. Their steaks, lamb, and burgers are reliable favourites, especially for mixed groups where no one can quite agree on what they feel like.
Stratosfare Restaurant - dinner with a view
Stratosfare sits at the top of the Skyline Gondola on Mount Ngongotahā, so it’s a really fun place to grab dinner. Once you’re up there, you’re treated to some of the best views over Rotorua - especially at sunset or once the city lights come on.
The restaurant itself is a buffet with a wide range of dishes, from fresh salads and seafood to roasts and (incredible) desserts. It’s not the cheapest option in town, but it’s one of those places where dinner feels like a bit more than just a meal. I normally head here if we’re celebrating something, it’s definitely a memorable night out in Rotorua.
And if you’re up for it, you can even squeeze in a luge ride before or after dinner!
So, where should you eat after a big day in Rotorua?
After a big day out exploring Rotorua, these are the spots I keep coming back to, good food, relaxed atmospheres, and the kind of places that round off the day nicely.
Whether you’re after something quick, something filling, or just somewhere to unwind with a drink, you’ll find something that fits.
Noho ora mai (stay well),
Tom
