Rotorua for two: the best romantic spots

Kia ora! It’s Tom again, from the team at Taiao Adventures.

When people think about a trip to Rotorua, they often picture adrenaline-fueled adventures or fun family holidays. And while we do that brilliantly, there’s another side to our city that, as a self-proclaimed hopeless romantic, I absolutely love. There’s a quiet, romantic spirit here, born from our stunning landscapes, steamy thermal pools, and the deep sense of connection you feel when you’re surrounded by so much natural beauty.

It’s a place that’s perfect for sharing. If you’re planning a trip with your favourite person, whether it’s for an anniversary, a special occasion, or just a much-needed getaway, I’ve got a few ideas for you. Here are some of my personal favourite things for couples to do in and around Rotorua.

For pure relaxation: a private thermal pool

There’s nothing quite like sinking into a private cedar hot tub, with steam rising around you as you look out at the forest or up at the stars. It’s the classic Rotorua relaxation experience, and it’s perfect for two, offering you a chance to talk, relax, and let the mineral water work its magic. You can find these special spots at places like Secret Spot Hot Tubs Rotorua for a forest setting, or the Polynesian Spa for lakeside views

A guide’s local tip: The evening slots are the most popular, so I’d recommend booking your private pool in advance, especially if you’re visiting on a weekend. Some spots even let you order a drink to enjoy while you soak, which is a lovely touch.

For a touch of magic: our twilight glow worm kayak tour

For a unique romantic experience, our glow worm tour is hard to beat. You’ll paddle together in a double kayak across the calm lake as dusk settles, heading for cliffs and caves that are completely inaccessible by foot. Before we guide you inside, we’ll gently switch off the headlamps, and you’ll watch the cave walls and ceiling come alive with thousands of tiny, blue-green lights. It’s a moment of shared wonder that’s hard to put into words, but that I’m sure you’ll both talk about for years to come.

A guide’s local tip: The double kayaks are perfect for couples, as you can paddle in rhythm and share the journey side-by-side. If you're celebrating a special occasion like an anniversary (or even a proposal!), let us know when you book. We love being part of those moments - and if you’d like something extra special, we also offer private tours, so you can have the magic all to yourselves.

For a quiet escape: a walk amongst giants

Sometimes the most romantic thing is just to walk and talk. For that, there is nowhere better than the Whakarewarewa Forest, among the giant redwood trees. Holding hands while you wander along the soft ground trails, with dappled sunlight filtering through the canopy, is incredibly peaceful. For an extra dose of enchantment, the Redwoods Treewalk at night is a must-do, with the forest lit up by beautiful lanterns.

A guide’s local tip: The main tracks near the entrance can be busy. For a more private experience, grab a trail map and venture a little deeper into the forest network. You’ll quickly find a quiet path all to yourselves.

For a breathtaking view: a scenic flight

If you’re looking to celebrate in a big way, seeing Rotorua’s lakes and volcanic landscapes from above in a floatplane or helicopter is a treat. You’ll see the vibrant colours of the crater lakes and the sheer scale of Mount Tarawera - the volcano that shaped so much of this region.

A guide’s local tip: A flight that includes a landing on one of the lakes is extra special. Taking off and landing on the water is a unique thrill and makes for an amazing shared experience.

For a delicious end to the day: a special dinner

Rotorua has a fantastic food scene. For a lively, vibrant atmosphere, you can’t go past the restaurants and bars on Eat Street. For something a little more intimate, there are a number of fantastic restaurants just off the main strip, or at some of the lakeside hotels, that offer incredible food in a quieter setting.

Rotorua is about making memories, and it’s a place that’s even better when they’re shared. I hope this helps you and your favourite person plan a special trip.

Noho ora mai (stay well),

Tom
